GTN Family - Educator Spotlight - Carol Murray

At Group Travel Network, we feel that everyone who crosses our path is intended to become a welcomed member of our extended family. These individuals come in many forms including clients, vendors, colleagues and more. We are so proud of our family, we decided to share some of the backgrounds to some of these incredible people. Each month we are going to spotlight a member of our family tree. One such GTN Family Member has accomplished so much, but not without major obstacles along the way.

The orchestra teacher at CrossRoads Intermediate, Carol Murray, has a true passion for music and her students. You can see a spark in her eye when she talks about either of these. Her passion started in high school, where her high school orchestra teacher, Susan Rice, had a major impact on her realization that she wanted to be a teacher – an orchestra teacher at that. Ms. Murray continued on to college, attending the University of South Carolina on a full-ride music scholarship. There, her mentor Pamela Hayes also had a large influence on her.  Mrs. Hayes was her cooperating teacher during her student teaching days. She taught Carol how to have fun teaching while fostering great relationships with students and producing fine string players, and Carol has now been teaching orchestra for 27 years!

When asked what her superpower would be, Ms. Murray replied that she wishes she could have endless energy – and by looking at her daily schedule, it sure does look tiresome! She arrives at school each day by 6:00am to get most of her planning done.  She does morning car duty every morning from 7:15am to 7:35am and then teaches block classes until school is dismissed.  After school, she answers phone calls and emails and attends school and district meetings until about 4:00. Finally after school, she gets to spend time with her family and three sweet dogs... unless of course she is busy with church music groups or rehearsals and concerts with the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra, where she plays in the cello section and has done so for the past 30 years. It’s no surprise that she was awarded teacher of the year at CrossRoads Intermediate! Her wish for her students is that they will develop life-long skills within music and to always find enjoyment in making music. Under her leadership, the sixth-grade orchestra students at CrossRoads consistently score Superior ratings at state and regional festivals and competitions. If she could give advice to future music educators, she says to have fun with your students while having very high standards and providing them with a top-notch music education - See every student with fresh eyes every day and love them just like their parents would love them!  She also lives by the quote; Happy people don’t have the best of everything. They MAKE the best of everything.

Carol has been traveling with Group Travel Network for almost 15 years now and we LOVE when she brings her students to our home base of Orlando, FL. Thanks for the never-ending friendship and your trust in us to deliver the best student travel trips possible!
